With months left to the 2022 General election, the Nairobi gubernatorial race is heating up with prominent politicians declaring their candidature.

On Saturday, October 30, Westlands MP Timothy Wanyonyi officially declared his bid to be the city's next governor. Wanyonyi stated that after serving as an MP, he now believes that he should rise to the helm of Nairobi County's leadership.

"Ladies and gentlemen, while I have made huge efforts and contributions to uplifting the lives of our people in Westlands Constituency for over 15years, I now have a bigger calling- to become the Governor of Nairobi County in 2022,” Wanyonyi declared.

The MP stated that he had worked hard and achieved admirable progress adding that he possesses the values to lead the country's capital city.

“As MP Westlands, I have worked with my people to attain such great progress for them by being honest, transparent, selfless, and dedicated, and by God’s divine mercy. This model of leadership has worked for Westlands; it will work for Nairobi as well,” he noted.

Wanyonyi's bid received a boost after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga's wife Ida endorsed him stating that he has proved that he has all it takes to lead the people of Nairobi and the party will firmly support his ambition.

"Tim is like my elder son, and he has a vision. We will ensure we support him so that he becomes the next Nairobi governor in 2022 under the ODM party ticket," Ida revealed.

However, in a quick rejoinder, former Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru took a swipe at Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and Wanyonyi claiming that Nairobians have already made up their mind, terming the two as non-starters.

"Keep on holding brief for whosoever. Nairobians know who and what they want. Mbele iko sawaChama ni UDA, Rais ni Ruto, Nairobi Governor is Bishop Margaret Wanjiru ukipenda mama na kazi. Stop comparing me to none starters!" Wanjiru stated.

She went ahead to express her confidence that she will emerge the winner in the upcoming general election claiming she has been ordained to serve as the next governor of Nairobi county.

"When you finish looking for another candidate holla my number. Nairobi is a done deal in heaven and on earth. If God is for me no one can be against me! In this race we lead, others can follow," the bishop said.

Sakaja has over time expressed interest to serve as the city's next governor. Sakaja stated that he is the one who bests understands the plight of the residents of Nairobi and that he will completely transform the county should he clinch the seat.

The vibrant and youthful senator has previously stated that he will completely do away with the cartels swindling the resources of the county and that he will rejuvenate and bring back the lost glory of Nairobi.
