Governor Mike Sonko Suspends Accountant Found With Sh7 Million Cash

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has ordered for the immediate suspension of the County's Chief Cashier following a raid on the cash office last week.

The Governor sent home the officer after being found in custody of more than Sh7 Million in cash.

Last week, Sonko made a surprise visit to the cash office at City Hall and discovered that the previous day's collections in excess of Sh7 Million in cash were lying with the cashiers by 11 am, though all cheques had been banked.

"I have personally just led a sting operation at the County Cash Office, City Hall after a tip-off from an anonymous source.

"It's unacceptable that yesterday's collections of Sh7 Million (cash) were still with the cashiers by 11 am yet the bank is only 50 meters away," an angry Sonko stated.

The Governor noted that under his watch, City Hall would cease being "anyone's cash cow" as he shall streamline revenue collection and management in line with the set laws.

Sonko explained that he had given clear instructions for the cash office to immediately install CCTV cameras which would be monitored by his office, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

During his inauguration, the Governor promised to fight and ensure all cartels in the city are effectively dealt with.

So far, Sonko has embarked on cleaning the city, enhancing sufficient supply of water and fighting cartels within City Hall.
