Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's New Announcement on Garbage Bags

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Tuesday morning came out in support of the plastic ban and pledged to be in the forefront in ensuring the county adopts eco-friendly bags.

In a statement, Sonko announced that his government would roll out eco-friendly garbage bags in the next few days.

"I wish to state categorically that I am in full support of the ban.

"Which is why, in the next few days, my administration will not only provide these eco-friendly bags made from corn and cassava starch to households for waste disposal but support the establishment of new factories and conversion of existing ones to manufacture them," he declared.

He added that he would engage in discussions with the producers of the eco-friendly bags that are 100% biodegradable, alongside key sector players including the Ministry of Environment and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

Sonko observed that the initiative provide thousands of jobs for the youth as well as providing an alternative to Nairobi traders and residents, in compliance with the law.

"Despite the huge inconvenience, the ban may cause to the manufacturers, the business community and consumers, we all have to agree that we have a duty to conserve and protect our environment for future generations," he conveyed.

The environment agency started an operation on Monday to ensure the plastic bag ban is being complied with Countrywide.

NEMA noted that they had sent eight teams to kick start the operation in Nairobi, however, the full implementation of the ban would begin on Tuesday.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu clarified that the Sh4 Million fine imposed on those found in possession of plastic bags will initially spare ordinary citizens.

In a special report published by Reuters, Prof. Wakhungu explained that the penalties will initially target manufacturers and suppliers of the outlawed plastic bags.

"Ordinary wananchi (citizens) will not be harmed," the CS clarified.
