The Karatu Stadium in Gatundu South has turned into a grazing field, months after the contractor abandoned the project.

The stadium is among those the Jubilee government had promised to set up after assuming power, in a bid to help youths grow their talent.

Ksh 260M had been injected into the project, which was set for completion in August 2020.

The construction kicked off in 2017, with the stadium set to host a total of 4000 persons.

In 2020 however, the multi-million project stalled when the contractor deserted the project, which has now been converted into a grazing field for goats and cows.

A team of cabinet secretaries visited the project last in 2020 to monitor the progress, and even gave the contractor an ultimatum. Despite that, the project is still yet to be completed.

According to the locals, when the contractor left, he had not paid the casual workers who had been absorbed to work on the site.

Some of the residents lament that the stadium was their source of income, this is because apart from working there, some were selling food to the casual workers on the site.

They have stated that as much as stalling of the project is a non-issue to the government, to them it has become a nightmare.

“I was the sole breadwinner in my family since my husband was ill and later passed on as I was waiting to be paid to clear his hospital bills,” Margaret Njeri, a lady who worked at the site as a casual worker stated.

Another local, Damaris Wangui, stated that she had opened a food joint where she fed all the casual workers, but the project coming to a halt has incurred her huge losses.

“I used to offer food to the workers on credit. Stalling of the project saw me lose Ksh161,000 which I was owed by the workers,” she remarked.

This is one of the many promised Government stadiums that have been under construction for more than four years and are yet to be completed.
