A family in Mumias was forced to spend the night in the cold on Thursday, November 4, after their furious landlady set their house ablaze.

A disagreement arose after the tenant was unable to pay Ksh800 rent arreas that she owed her landlady.

The owner of the property approached her tenant in the evening, demanding that she clears the debt owed.

The 40-year-old tenant, however, was unable to raise the full amount but could afford to pay Ksh400 at the time pledging to clear the balance in a few days.

The Landlady's patience, was however, running thin as she demanded the tenant clears the debt immediately, stating that she could not give her more time to settle the debt.

Having realized that she was not going to receive the full amount from the tenant, she rushed back to her house and shortly after, came back with a bottle full of kerosene and a matchbox.

The Landlady then stormed into her tenant’s house, pouring kerosene all over the clothes and bedding in the room then setting them on fire.

As her possessions went up in flames, the 40-year-old begged her landlady to put out the fire, but she triumphantly paced up and down the scene in jubilation.

The tenants' possessions, valued at Ksh47,000, were reduced to ashes in a matter of minutes.

According to neighbours and eye witnesses, the tenant watched teary eyed as the fire engulfed her home, while the landlady reveled in the woman's agony.

The landlady is currently in police custody as she awaits to be arraigned in court.

This incident has come at a time when cases of fire outbreaks, especially in schools, are at an all-time high.
