Former Kakamega Senator, Boni Khalwale, was on Saturday, November 6, gutted after two dormitories at his son's school, Kakamega High School, were burnt down.

The fire allegedly started while students were in class for their morning preps.

In a statement, Khalwale expressed disappointment at the perpetrators, noting that he was an alumnus of the school.

"The so called students at Kakamega High School have set our iconic Alma Marta on fire! As a current parent at this school, I am ashamed, to say the least," Khalwale stated.

At the time of publishing, the cause of the fire was yet to be established.

Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries that were reported.

"No student was injured, it was only their property that was destroyed. I am appealing to parents to remain calm as we investigate the cause of the fire," the school Principal, Gerald Orina, stated.

Cases of school fires have been on the rise with property valued at millions of shillings being destroyed in the inferno and learning processes being distracted.

School heads have faulted parents for exposing their children to lavish and comfortable lifestyles while at home, saying such exposures can be linked to errant behaviours including torching of schools.

In an interview, Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Rarieda branch chairman, James Okoyo, stated that these types of lifestyles are the main causes of unrest in schools.

“Most children would always want to do something that would send them back home because the majority of parents have put them in a luxurious life with access to everything that they would want including a mobile phone,” Okoyo lamented.
