Police officers living in Harambee Police Line in Buru Buru have been living in darkness for more than a week after Kenya Power disconnected their electricity.

The power distributor is said to have cut off electricity supply over unpaid bills which were stood at more than Ksh10 million.

The police line is shared by officers from different units and stations including General Duty officers, Traffic Department, Criminal Investigations Department, and those guarding top government officials.

Reports indicated that police were afraid that they will soon have their water supply disconnected over unpaid bills.

Police living in the area now want the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to intervene and help settle the matter.

However, police spokesperson Bruno Shioso told the press there was a new policy requiring officers to pay their own bills.

Shioso further explained that police officers who move to the vacant houses in the area and are afraid of inheriting bills from previous tenants should get their own tokens.

“If you are a new tenant you apply for new metres to start afresh in your name. We also need to find out from Kenya Power why they disconnected them,” the spokesperson emphasized.

The officers maintained that the bills have been ballooning since some of them were inherited as debts incurred before they were directed to foot their personal power bills.

They also stated that they were not given any notice by Kenya Power adding that prior to the new directive the government used to pay the bills.

The National Police Service used to deduct the money from their salaries but now the officers think someone did not remit the money to Kenya Power.

Officers claim some houses allocated to the General Service Unit (GSU) in Nairobi had similar arrears but were cleared after they made some threats.
