The National Police Service has finally taken action to avert the escalating cases of the stoning of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger train.

Through their statement released on Wednesday, November 10, police have specifically pointed at the recent cases reported where the SGR train has been stoned while plying the Mombasa-Voi route.

Without revealing the extent of damage caused, the police have taken action by sending a warning to the residents stating that those found culpable will be held responsible.

The Police deployed units drawn from, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), National Intelligence Service (NIS), and  Railways Police.

Other than warning the residents of Voi, the law enforcement officers further conducted sensitisation drives in the area. An inter-agency delegation led by Sub-County Police Commander-Mombasa Terminus Stephen Munene conducted the drive in various parts of Voi.

The team also reminded the residents on the rules and regulations governing railway lines across the country and penalties for violating them.

"The team held public barazas in Birikani location and Maungu village, and engaged the public on rules and regulations governing the railway line. The members of the public were further warned against vandalism, stealing railways' property, illegal grazing and trespassing into the railway line," National Police Service stated.

They added," The team also visited Kalela and Marasi primary schools and engaged the pupils on responsible living, and the dangers of breaking the law and warned them against hurling objects at the train."

Members of the public pledged their support and commitment towards ensuring the safety and security of the railways' corridor.

Authorities hope that this will end the trend that has been reported even in some parts within the city where unidentified people hurl objects at the trains.

According SGR, the action, is treated just like any other crime and attracts heavy penalties and even jail term.
