Sonko was in court for the hearing of his Ksh357 million graft case, while Waititu was attending his Ksh588 million corruption case.

Both governors were ejected from office after being impeached by their respective county assemblies and the decision upheld by the Senate.

Waititu was impeached on January 20, 2020 on three charges; Violation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, Crimes under the national Law and Abuse of office/Gross Misconduct.

The former Kiambu Governor was accused of corruption and abuse of office by members of the Kiambu County Assembly who initiated impeachment proceedings against him on December 19, 2019.

Following his ouster, his deputy James Karanja Nyoro, was sworn in as the new Governor of Kiambu on January 31, 2020.

The same year Waititu was impeached, Sonko also faced the same tribulations. This is after Senate voted against him on December 17, 2020.

The Governor was accused of gross misconduct, violation of the constitution, crimes under national law, and abuse of office.

At the time of impeachment, Sonko was yet to select a deputy governor following a protracted battle with the Members of the County Assembly. Hence, Nairobi County Speaker Benson Mutura took over the running of the capital for 60 days.

The county would run without a substantive Governor for more than ten months before the government gazetted Ann Kananu, the deputy governor, would be sworn in on Tuesday, November 16, to take the leadership mantle from Sonko.
