Two of the three terror convicts who escaped from the Kamiti Maximum Prison and were nabbed in Kitui County, had begged police officers to kill them rather than get them locked up again.

Vetelo Komu, the corporal in charge of a 17-member team of the NPR based in Nuu Ward, Mwingi, narrated that the convicts indicated they were better off dead.

The convicts, Musharaf Abdalla, Mohamed Abdi Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo, also confessed their crimes and alleged to have bribed their way out of the prison.

"...one begged to be killed rather than be returned to prison. Another burst into tears, saying we would rather kill him than return him to Kamiti," Komu told the Standard.

The fugitives explained that they had used a private car from Kamiti to Machakos County after which they boarded a public van to Kitui.

From Kitui, they hoped onto another Public Service Vehicle (PSV) to Endau in Mwingi West.

A witness who aided in the arrest of the trio narrated that the three travelled almost 160 kilometres, from Nairobi to the remote village in search of their route to Somalia through Boni Forest.

"They walked in some sneaky way creating a zig-zag formation and crossed the road from one point to another. They also seemed to avoid any contact with other residents compelling them to walk through thorny bushes," Paul Mwaniki stated.

The convicts at some point asked residents for direction leading to Boni Forest, a query that raised more suspicion.

"They were not aware of the roads in the area, they were clearly visitors. We noticed them immediately they set their feet in Endau Malalani Ward. I am wondering if they were ferried in a vehicle or an alternative means to get here," Mwaniki added.
