Police have launched a manhunt for three suspects who escaped from custody at the Kilgoris Police Station on Saturday morning, November 20.

The suspects allegedly escaped through a hole they dug after removing bricks from the wall of their cell and fled to Kilgoris township.

Police in a report indicated that the three were among five suspects held in the cell and the other two denied any knowledge of the escape after questioning.

According to the officer who was on night duty, he did not hear the suspects escaping. Police have taken the officer and two others and placed them in custody.

One of the suspects on the run was in custody for suspected murder while the second suspect was arrested over allegations of stealing.

This comes two days after three terrorists who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison were re-arrested. The trio, Musharraf Abdalla, Joseph Juma and Mohammed Abdi, were reportedly trying to flee to the neighbouring country of Somalia, when they were pounced on. The arrest ended after a three-day manhunt.

The three were arrested following a tip-off from the public.

Following their escape on Sunday night, November 14, President Uhuru Kenyatta held a crisis meeting at State House with security officials.

In the meeting, the president announced the sacking of Commissioner General of Prisons Service, Wycliffe Ogalo.

Heavily armed detectives raided Magereza House commando-style and whisked the prison boss away after which they accompanied him home.

The president also ordered the State Department of Correctional Services to sanction disciplinary action against all Kenya Prisons Service personnel who were on duty when the security breach occurred; which action shall include redeployment and, or immediate suspension of all affected officers.

The president ordered action be brought against anyone who is found guilty of aiding the escape of the convicts.
