CCTV footage has now revealed what transpired inside the bank that was raided by robbers in Kisumu's Angawa area.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, November 24, Nyanza Police Commander, Karanja Muiruri, revealed that the police are looking for one suspect who masterminded the robbery.

He further noted that the CCTV footage obtained from the bank showed the suspect approach the establishment and head to a cashier on the second floor.

While there, he displayed a notice before ordering the cashier to empty Ksh100,000 bundles into his bag, an order that the cashier was not very comfortable with.

The staffer then raised the alarm which made the suspect hurl teargas, throwing the lobby into a frenzy. He used the opportunity to move to the ground floor before escaping.

He left behind his shirt which police officers are keeping as exhibit and analysing.

After the shootout that lasted for hours, the mastermind and his entourage escaped the scene despite a heavy police presence.

According to the area police boss, the four disguised themselves as clients when all the bank's staff and clients were evacuated.

Nyanza Regional Commissioner, Magu Mutindika, noted that the robbers must have changed clothes before leaving undetected.

“We have in our possession a man’s shirt. We suspect that the robbers had a change of clothes and left the banking hall during evacuation of distressed clients,” he stated.

A witness told the press that the commotion began at around 11am when the suspects arrived at the bank and threw a teargas inside.

"At 11am, there are people who came to this bank. Some got in and others remained outside. During the time, there was a teargas that was thrown in and caused a frenzy from the customers inside.

"I got the report and called the Regional Police Commander who came here with other officers to see what was happening. After some time, one of those suspects wrote a not to a lady demanding Ksh100,000 without which they would finish her," narrated the witness.

Staff and customers who were evacuated from the building in Angawa, Kisumu County were taken to Central Police Station where they are expected to record statements. No suspect was found among the group.
