The puzzle of Milly Nafula, an A- student who missed out on joining Moi University, is finally starting to unravel 14 years later.
In 2009, Nafula sat for her finals in high school and scored an A- which guaranteed her a place in the university.
After the results were announced, Joint Admissions Board (JAB) released letters to students who were to join university and Nafula was hopeful that she was among the lucky few to secure a slot in a public university.
But upon visiting her then high school, Manor House Secondary in Kitale, Saboti Constituency, she found that her letter was not among those that had been sent to the learning institution.
Nafula eventually got tired of waiting and reported the matter to the local district education office but was referred to the JAB office in Nairobi.
However, Nafula was unable to travel to the city at the time due to lack of bus fare.
The district Education office took up her case and demanded to know from the school why the candidate had not received her admission letter.
According to reports, the school maintained that the letter was never sent. However, Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) upon investigations, found that a person had registered for admission to Moi University for a degree course in Tourism using Nafula's identity.
KUCCPS told a local publication that Nafula had registered at Moi University but the 32-year-old refuted the claims and told the press that she has been working odd jobs in the village after she failed to obtain the letter.
"I really wanted to join university and there is no way I would have failed to report. I simply did not get the admission letter.
"I would not have let an opportunity to join university pass me for any reason. If I had the money, I would have followed up on my admission in Nairobi as I had been advised," Nafula stated.
The puzzle on who obtained Nafula's admission letter and registered at Moi University may remain unsolved, nevertheless, KUCCPS CEO, Agnes Wahome, issued a statement noting that the government would assist her in her pursuit to acquire university education.
