The Nairobi Governor, Anne Kananu, has given a lifeline to the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) by extending its contract.

Kananu extended the transfer of deeds agreement for the Gen Mohammed Badi-led outfit on Friday, December 10, during a brief signing ceremony at the City Hall.

The Nairobi County boss, and Justus Kangethe, the Acting County Secretary, oversaw the extension of the deed of transfer of functions to NMS to August 2022.

This comes barely a month after Kananu was sworn in as the substantive governor after serving as the deputy for over six months.

Speaking to a local media station, Leboo Morintat, the Nairobi County Head of Public Service stated that the extension will be made public on December 12 during the Jamhuri Day celebrations or a day after.

“The extension of NMS contract is healthy and will serve Nairobi residents till August 2022. We expect the official announcement on Jamhuri Day,'' Leboo stated.

Following the move, Major General Mohammed Badi will be in charge of the county's major functions until a new governor is elected.

The NMS mandate was set to expire in February 2022.

The entity was formed after President Uhuru Kenyatta oversaw former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko hand over several functions to NMS.

On Thursday, December 9, the Badi-led entity announced that inspections and approvals for air evacuation services to ease access to hospitals will be rolled out.

Speaking during celebrations to mark the tenth anniversary of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, Gen Badi announced that the hospital will have a helicopter landing pad for emergency medical evacuations.
