Area police boss Roseline Chebosho confirmed the incident and asserted that police had already arrived at the scene.

"One person is confirmed dead and I will give details after the assessment of the scene is done," stated Chebosho while speaking to a local publication.

This came a few days after another mine collapsed two weeks ago in the same sub-county within the Abimbo area, where eight people were trapped in the rubble.

Rescuers managed to pull out six gold diggers, where three were pulled out on the day of the incident, and three were rescued six days later.

They also retrieved one body from the scene, while the search is still ongoing to find one miner is still trapped in the rubble.

Tom Okwach has been trapped in the mine for thirteen days, and his family is still hopeful that he will be rescued, pitching camp at the site waiting for the rescue operation will come to an end.

The rescuers were communicating with Okwach through the pipes used to pump air into the cave, but after five days the air compressor used in the pumping went silent, causing apprehension in his family members.

While speaking to a local TV station, they, however, expressed hope that they were nearing Okwach's location as of Thursday, December 16.

"We are still working on retrieving Okwach, we hope to find him alive, and we feel like we are close to where he is," a rescuer stated at the scene.
