At the same time, Members of the National Assembly have approved the nomination of Caroline Naikena and Thomas Okoth Oyier as members of the Gender and Equality Commission following a departmental team vetting.

They will now await appointment by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The National Assembly also approved Ambassador Anthony Mwaniki Muchiri’s qualifications after President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated him for the position of Public Service Commission Chairperson.

“The Speaker of the National Assembly conveyed the message from President Kenyatta to the House and referred the nominee’s name and curriculum vitae to the Departmental Committee on Administration and National Security for vetting and reporting to the House in accordance with the provisions of standing order 45,” reads an official Parliament document.

Currently, Muchiri is Kenya’s ambassador to Cuba.

The President declared the position vacant via a Gazette Notice on Tuesday, August 24, after the previous occupant of the office, Stephen Kirogo, passed away on May 14, 2021.

99 people applied for the position which was advertised in national newspapers including 73 men, 26 women and two persons with disability.

Out of the applicants, 25 possessed Doctoral Degrees, 49 had Masters Degrees, 26 held Bachelor's Degrees and 2 had National Diplomas as the highest academic qualifications.

Only 12 people were, however, shortlisted for the position. Muchiri emerged victorious in the interview exercise that took place between Wednesday November 10, 2021 and Thursday November 11, 2021.
