The Junction, a popular mall in Nairobi, on Tuesday, December 29, kickstarted a policy of turning away unvaccinated customers.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke,  a family of four, a man, his wife and two children were seen walking away from the entrance of the mall after a conversation with one of the security gates.

It was later established that the mall required shoppers to show proof of vaccination before entering the mall.

Speaking to NTV,  a shopper who identified himself as Francis stated that he was required to present his vaccination certificate. He shared a message sent to him from the Ministry of Health with one of the guards manning the before being allowed entry to the mall.

"On the gate, I was told to give my vaccination details. Luckily I had them on my phone," he stated as he showed the journalist the message confirming that he received the first jab.

"So many people were turned away because they did not have certification," Francis stated.

He advised other shoppers coming to the mall to carry with them their vaccination certification. The move by the mall comes after the government issued an order instructing malls, restaurants and public places not to allow unvaccinated persons access to their premises.

On December 14, Yaya Centre announced that it would deny customers who have not been inoculated entry to the mall.

Despite a pending court case challenging the directive issued by the Ministry of Health, Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has remained adamant that the same should be followed to the latter.

The decision was informed by an increased positivity rate paired with a high infection rate.

Stakeholders in the transport industry have castigated the government for reaching the decision without consulting them. On the other hand, a number of politicians have come out to question the practicality of the directive.
