The Governor for the Central Bank of Uganda, Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, has died in Kenya.
According to a statement by the Bank of Uganda (BoU), Mutebile died on Sunday, January 23, while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.
The BoU described him as a gallant leader and mourned his passing on.
"It is with profound sadness that the Bank of Uganda announces the death of its Gallant Governor, Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile.
"He passed away at the Nairobi Hospital on Sunday, January 23 at around 5.00a.m," read the statement in part.
Mutebile was admitted to the hospital on December 31, 2021, after he collapsed due to complications related to diabetes.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Patrick Njoroge, sent his message of condolence to the Bank of Uganda.
"I am deeply saddened by the news this morning of the passing away of Prof Emmanuel Timusiime . I interacted with the late governor on numerous occasions since my joining of CBK in June 2015,"
"I am particularly grateful for his welcoming me into the community of East African Central Bank Governors and I cannot forget the many courtesies to me. I also extend the heartfelt sympathies to my fellow Governors. We will miss his wise counsel , experience and gentle humor," Njoroge wrote.
A seasoned professional economist, Mutebile was at the helm of BoU and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Uganda since 2001.
Prior to his appointment, he served as secretary to the treasury from 1992 to 2001.
He is remembered for spearheading the design and implementation of the Economic Reform Program that restored Uganda from the economic crises of the 1970s and 1980s to sound economic performance during his service as the Secretary to the Treasury.
