Mugoiri Girls High School in Murang'a County has recalled 14 students who were suspended for getting a second helping of a special meal.

The decision by the school administration came after a section of Kenyans took to social media to lament over the suspension of the students terming the incident as a minor case of indiscipline.

In a suspension letter that made rounds on social media, the 14 girls, who were suspended on January 19, were directed to return to school on Tuesday, January 25, with Ksh10,550.

The school explained that the money was to cater for a special meal that was to be prepared for the other students. They added that some of the students missed the special meal because of the action of the 14 students.

“You are requested to accompany her back to school on January 25, to meet with the disciplinary committee. Pay Ksh10,550 to cater for the special meal for the whole school," the letter read.

However, the school principal, Susan Mundia, stated that the suspension was effected by the deputy principal while she was away.

She added that the schools’ Board of Management (BOM) reverted the suspension stating that she called the parents and apologized to them over the incident.

“This was a mistake, but it happened when I was away but I take responsibility for it being the head of school,”

“I called the parents and apologized to them for the turn of events and they are comfortable bringing their daughters back to school,” the principal stated.

In a Facebook post by Ndugu Nyoro, the social media user who first highlighted the story, he revealed that he had a conversation with the principal who further disclosed that they would look for alternative punishments for the students.

"Upon coming back to school, she has been reaching out to the parents of the students to bring back their children for alternative ways of correcting the mistake

“Other ways a mother would do to achieve similar or better results, without punishing parents," Nyoro stated.
