  • Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has revealed an extensive campaign plan for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

Speaking during a Muranga grassroots leaders meeting held on Monday, January 24, in Murang'a County, Macharia stated that they would embark on a six-month campaign trail to drum up support for Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader.

He explained that Raila was best suited for the job adding that the ODM leader had a reputable career and would continue with the development agenda of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"We are saying this openly because we are not hiding, that from today for six months we shall be in the campaign trail to campaign for Baba (Raila) because we don't have any other alternative. There is no other option,” Macharia stated.

During the meeting, the CS often referred to Raila as the fifth president adding that the former PM was better placed to win in the August 9 contest as compared to Deputy President William Ruto.

He explained that the campaign team would ensure that the 98 per cent voter turnout registered in the 2017 General Elections is replicated in the august polls in favour of Raila.

Macharia defended his decision to openly support the Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate stating that he was also an ordinary citizen who was familiar with issues facing Kenyans.

“In 2022 August, that turnout which was actually historic of 98 per cent will go to Raila.

“We want to assure you as the fifth president that even when cabinet secretaries are Kenyans who are aware of things facing Kenyans. We want to assure you that your vote basket in August will have the votes of 2017,” he stated.

During the event, Macharia was accompanied by Muranga Women Representative Sabina Chege, Peter Kenneth, and David Murathe.

The statements the CS come after it was reported that Uhuru would embark on a nationwide thanksgiving tour before his term comes to an end in less than eight months.

On several occasions, various members of Uhuru’s cabinet including Interior CS Fred Matiang’i have openly declared their support for Raila amidst fierce criticism from allies of Ruto.
