The Varkey Foundation in partnership with the Chegg organisation has announced a Ksh10 million prize award targeting students.
The Global student prize is a constituent of the Global Teacher Prize which was won by a Kenyan, Teacher Peter Tabichi in 2019. The Varkey Foundation is owned by billionaire Sunny Varkey who is the former owner of the prestigious Hillcrest International School in Karen, Nairobi.
"We are delighted to announce that the application and nomination process for the 2022 Chegg org Global Student Prize is now open.
“The Global Student Prize is a Ksh 10 million ($100,000) award presented to an exceptional student, making a real impact on learning, the lives of their peers and on society beyond," read the statement.
The prize aims at recognizing the academic potential of students who are impacting their communities through various initiatives.
“Students applying for the Global Student Prize will be assessed on their academic achievement, impact on their peers, how they make a difference in their community and beyond.
“We also access how they overcome the odds to achieve, how they demonstrate creativity and innovation, and how they operate as global citizens,” read the statement in part.
On his part, Varkey stated that the award would recognize the efforts of students and improve the quality of education.
“Both the Global Teacher Prize and the Global Student Prize have been launched to highlight the importance of education in tackling the great challenges ahead – from climate change to growing inequality to global pandemics.
“With the world leaders now focused on rebuilding our world in the wake of the pandemic, I urge them to never forget that it is only by prioritizing education that we can safeguard all our tomorrows. Education is the key to facing the future with confidence,” he stated
How to Apply
Applicants interested in the prize are required to visit the Varkey foundation award platform and register an account before submitting their application.
Other members of the public can also nominate students they believe deserve to win the award.
“If students are being nominated, the person nominating them will write a brief description online explaining why. The student being nominated will then be sent an email letting them know they’ve been nominated and inviting them to apply for the prize,” read the statement in part.
However, only students aged 16 years and below are eligible for the award. Interested applicants are also encouraged to make their application before it closes on April 17.
