The government has reached an agreement with Poland to allow Kenyans stranded in Ukraine safe passage.
Kenya and Poland reached an agreement that will allow Kenyans leaving Ukraine to stay in the country for 15 days as the government secures means to bring them back home.
Notably, Poland agreed to also allow Kenyans without Polish visas in the European nation as reports emerged that over 200 Kenyan nationals were in Ukraine.
The deal was arrived at after it emerged that some Kenyans, who were leaving Ukraine, had been stranded at the Polish border.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Amb Macharia Kamau, and his team have been working to secure safe passage for Kenyans with European Union country envoys in Nairobi.
The government revealed that about 201 Kenyans are in Ukraine and 18 reside in the country permanently while 103 are students.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintained that Kenyans living in Ukraine should make their own arrangements to leave the country.
“Kenyans have been advised to make an assessment as to their circumstances and to take necessary precaution and or make arrangements to leave as they deem fit in light of their own circumstances," Amb Kamau stated.
“Some Kenyans, however, have been stuck at border points, particularly with Poland, and because of visa restrictions they have not been able to cross over,” he added.
According to international media houses, Russia launched a full-scale military operation in Ukraine using missiles and other air attacks.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that 137 people, both servicemen and civilians, had been fatally injured and hundreds more wounded in the first day of shelling.
On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin argued that he needed to protect its citizens in Eastern Ukraine which is the disputed territory area.
