Kenyan motorists plying Mombasa Road and  Waiyaki Way have a reason to smile after the contractor building the Nairobi expressway partially opened the elevated section.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, motorists were seen using the raised roadway from ABC Place near the James Gichuru junction.

The vehicles included private cars as well as public service vehicles that used the inbound lane which was used for both oncoming and outbound traffic.

Although the road contractor has begun tarmacking the road, the road markings are yet to be laid down - with motorists being urged to exercise caution when using the highway.

The government is pushing the Chinese contractor to finish the Ksh88 billion project before April 2022.

While the tarmacking continues, the toll stations, which will be used to collect funds have also been set up at various points.

Owing to the traffic snarl-up in Nairobi occasioned by the construction of the expressway, Transport Cabinet Secretary CS James Macharia asked the Chinese Company to fix the old roads in the underpass to ease traffic.

KeNHA has also begun the beautification of the 27-kilometre-highway, which has seen the planting of creeper plants on some of the pillars. Aside from providing aesthetic value, it would also stop people from using graffiti on the pillars.

On December 28, President Uhuru Kenyatta took a test drive on the project set off by his government as he carried out an impromptu inspection of its progress.

Driving a black Range Rover, the Head of State led a fleet of cars ferrying several government officials in the activity and noted that it would be completed by March this year.

“The indicated date of March for completion of this project is going to be met. And I will be very proud to drive all the way from Machakos to Ruroni to launch the road to Mau Summit,” Uhuru stated.
