At one point in life, most Kenyans will find the need to visit major government offices to receive in-person services. Although nowadays most services can be accessed online, it is important to know the function and location of these crucial offices in the event a need arises.
KRA
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) was established by an Act of Parliament in July 1995 and was tasked with the authority of collecting revenue on behalf of the government of Kenya.
KRA offices are plenty across the country, stretched out in 41 Tax Service Offices, 43 Services Centres and 52 Huduma Centres.
Its main offices are located at Times Tower, Haile Selassie Avenue in Nairobi CBD. Other offices can be found in Upper Hill, Mombasa Road and Thika among other places.
NHIF
The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is the first national health financing scheme established in 1966 by the Ministry of Health to address the healthcare needs of the people.
To join, one must be above 18 years of age and have monthly earnings of more than Ksh1000. Contribution is as little as Ksh 500 and a pool of contributions are collected from the members to meet the cost of members who are in need of medical care.
Services include but are not limited to comprehensive in-patient services, out-patient services, specialised and tailor-made packages.
NHIF offices are spread across the country in 61 branches and its services can also be acquired in all the Huduma Centres.
Its main office is in Upper Hill, Nairobi along Ragati Road while other branches can be found in Westlands, Ruaraka, Buruburu, Industrial Area, Gikomba, Kangemi and Eastleigh. Their services can also be acquired in main hospitals such as Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.
Ministry of State for Immigration & Registration of Persons
The office was created under the Office of the President and falls part of the Executive, legislative and other general government support systems. It dates back to 1906 when the Immigration Restriction Ordinance was enacted.
It serves to issue travel documents to citizens, control the entry of non-citizens and grant citizenship to non-Kenyans. It is also responsible for registering and monitoring the movement of non-Kenyans within the country.
The department can be found in Nairobi, Coast and Western Regions. Its main office is in Nyayo House Nairobi.
The department also issues out National Identity Cards to Kenyan Citizens who have attained the age of 18 years and over.
NTSA
The National Transport and Safety Authority Act (NTSA) is a statutory body established by the National Transport and Safety Authority Act (2012) to ensure safety on the roads. Its functions include Motor Vehicle Registration, Transport Licensing, Motor Vehicle Inspection, Road Safety and Driver Testing.
The authority’s main offices are located at 316 Upper Hill Chambers along 2nd Ngong Avenue, Upper Hill Nairobi.
Registrar of Births and Deaths
The office ensures there is registration of all crucial events including births, marriages and deaths and issues relevant certificates as proof of such registration. This helps in government planning and promotes good use of the country’s resources.
Its main offices are in Lower Hill Road, behind UAP Towers in Nairobi.
HELB
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Education established in July 1995 through an Act of Parliament called “Higher Education Loans Board Act’ Cap 213A. Its core function is to provide finance to Kenyans pursuing Higher Education through mobilisation and management of resources.
Its headquarters are in Anniversary Towers, along University Way in Nairobi and is also present in various Huduma Centres across the countries.
TSC
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) was established in 1967 after retired President Moi fought for the formation of one teacher body. It was formed through an act of parliament to give teachers one employer and one uniform term and conditions of service.
Their functions include registering, employing, promoting, disciplining and paying teachers.
Their head office is located in Upper Hill along Kilimanjaro Avenue opposite the NHIF building.
