The family of a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate who was run over by a bus belonging to the military has sent an appeal to the government.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, March 20, the family of Halima Kinya revealed that she is hospitalised at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), fighting for her life.
She was run over by the bus on Thursday, March 17, after sitting her KCSE paper that afternoon at Waso Secondary School in Isiolo County.
According to her brother's account, Kinya suffered chest trauma and lower abdomen injuries and was taken to KNH for specialized treatment.
She was traveling on a motorbike which was hit by the bus.
The family is now calling for the arrest of the driver of the military bus and wants the state to chip in and help them settle the hospital bills that are swelling day by day.
"They (military) took her to Isiolo Referral Hospital and abandoned her there. We had to raise Ksh20,000 to fuel the hospital ambulance to take her to Nairobi.
“We expected that having been injured by a state vehicle, the government should have intervened but we have been left on our own,” her brother told Nation.
It is believed that the bus was ferrying soldiers at the time the accident occurred.
Confirming the incident, Isiolo County Police Commander Hassan Barua noted that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
The case of Halima is not an isolated one. Since the start of the national test, a number of cases touching on the security of students have been reported.
On Monday, March 14, Victor Kipkoech Mutai, a KCSE candidate at Chilchila Secondary School in Kipkelion West collapsed and died while sitting his English paper.
He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Fort-Ternan Sub-county Hospital, in Kericho County.
