A bus full of passengers overturned after it collided with a lorry in Ndarugo along the Thika Superhighway on Monday, March 21. 

 The Juja sub-county traffic police commander George Muriithi, who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke, confirmed that the bus belonging to the Super Metro SACCO was heading to Nairobi before it collided with the lorry. 

He noted that they had launched investigations into the accident with the cause of the crash yet to be established.

He added that 15 passengers, who had sustained injuries after the collision, were rushed to hospital. 

"We don't have any fatalities. It's about 15 passengers were rushed to hospital," Muriithi noted.

 Videos of the accident had surfaced online showing the extent of the damage caused on both vehicles as the lorry had swerved into a ditch.  Passersby and witnesses were captured rushing to the scene in a bid to rescue the trapped passengers. 

The accident affected the smooth traffic flow for some time as people milled around the scene to catch a glimpse of what was happening.

The latest figures by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) data indicated that 3,212 died in road accidents between January and September 2021.

This shows a 652 increase in accidents as compared to a similar period in 2020 whereby 2,560 fatalities were recorded.

In the report, Outering Road was regarded as the most dangerous with 44 fatalities. Waiyaki way followed with 38 fatalities while Mombasa road and Northern Bypass each recorded 29 cases.  

Southern Bypass recorded 28 fatalities while the Eastern Bypass rounded up the top five list with 27 road accident fatalities. 

Thika Superhighway came in sixth with 25 fatalities while Kangundo Road was listed seventh with 23 fatalities.
