President Uhuru Kenyatta reportedly reached out to his deputy, William Ruto after the Supreme Court declared that the Constitutional Amendment Bill of 2020 was unconstitutional.
Insiders privy to the developments detailed that the President texted the deputy and the two spoke on a wide range of issues, despite openly attacking each other in the past few weeks.
Kenyatta and Ruto were reported to have discussed the handshake, the legal ramifications of the BBI ruling, and brokering a truce.
“The two leaders alluded to having a sit down to discuss how to end their row which has reached a maddening point,” a source close to the two intimated.
He, nonetheless, did not divulge whether the DP agreed to a sit-down, especially after reports alleged that the President accused him of orchestrating his impeachment plot.
Kirinyaga Governor, Anne Waiguru had urged the President to reach out to the DP and initiate a handshake to reduce the tension escalating between their allies.
"If you managed to get a handshake deal with Raila, we are pleading with you that in the next four months, kindly shake hands with Ruto so that you do not leave divided factions when your time in power lapses.
"We ask you to strike a handshake deal with Ruto so that your dignity is maintained even when you exit the stage after the August polls," Waiguru pleaded.
Reports of a discussion between Ruto and Kenyatta came moments after the DP castigated the President and Azimio La Umoja presidential aspirant, Raila Odinga, for crafting the BBI initiative which was rejected by the Supreme Court.
“We want to tell our Handskake brothers that the BBI fraud they feasted on the people of Kenya, has been confirmed by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional, null and void, the Handshake brothers need to apologise to the people of Kenya,” Ruto stated.
It is not yet clear how Raila will perceive a handshake between Ruto and Raila, as the President recently endorsed him as his successor. The former Prime, nonetheless, noted that he was pleased with the Supreme Court ruling.
“The verdict is empathetic that every state organ must always subject itself to the people of Kenya and must never usurp their sovereignty by substituting their will with that of state officers and state organs," read his statement in part.
