A Kenyan comedian has received international attention after his video mimicking a top-rated football commentators went viral.
Meshack Kiprop Biwott famously known as Arap Uria has been recognised by South Africa owned Supersport TV after appearing on the English Premier League show, that covers UK's top-flight football league on Friday, April 1.
Arap Uria was recognised for imitating celebrated sports commentator Peter Drury. He does his mimicking through lip-synching what Drury is saying to his commentary.
Drury is considered football's ultimate wordsmith for his ability to weave words into the fabric of some of the most iconic moments in the game.
The 54-year-old British national commands a global audience and cult-like following owing to his genuine passion for football, combined with his rich diction in English, which also attracted Arap Uria.
Arap Uria's moment of fame was made public by Supersport TV, which noted that Drury, the sports poet, has sent a message recognising his skill mimicking his commentaries.
"Arap Uria has been given us some of the most entertaining videos on social media and Peter Drury has noticed!" Supersport TV wrote on its social media page on Saturday, April 2.
Drury went ahead to send a message to Arap Uria encouraging him to put in more efforts in his venture.
"Arap it is Peter here, I really wish I could be with you today but I'm here in Doha to witness the World Cup draw which is happening today," Drury stated
"I love what you do. I'm terrifically laughing with you it is superb with all the passion that you show and love your work. I hope one day we will get to meet face to face and you can teach me how to commentate."
However, during his interview with the station, he encountered an internet outage that affected the virtual conversation between him and the hosts.
With over 260,000 subscribers across different social media platforms, Arap Uria has been making a name for himself by imitating other top figures including Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Uria is his family name and his character draws inspiration from his grandfather. He started out doing comedy clips where he would act as a drunkard.
Arap Uria graduated from Masinde Muliro University in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Education.
