CCTV Captures Matatu Ramming Into Crowd in Eastleigh [VIDEO]

One person is feared dead after a matatu, which was captured on CCTV camera, ploughed into a crowd in Eastleigh, Nairobi County.

The 29-second clip, which was shared online on Sunday, April 3, showed that the 14-seater matatu hitting a minibus as well as boda boda motorcycle.

At least seven people also sustained injuries in the incident that took place at the busy Eastleigh Kilimanjaro Roundabout.

Some of the people who escaped death by a whisker were seen scampering away for their safety with other screaming as soon as they saw the matatu speeding towards them.

It was not immediately established if the matatu was registered under any SACCO and whether the death toll and the number of injuries was likely to rise.

This comes at a time when the National Police Service has heightened security across the country over increased insecurity, accidents  and unworthy vehicles on the roads. 

Motorists and other road users have been urged to be cautious especially during April holidays including the month of Ramadhan and Easter.

“The National Police Service with its partners within the multiagency framework has taken adequate measures to provide security in all public places. Special arrangements have been made to secure major urban areas,” explained Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso.

Accident cases have been on the rise lately with the latest National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) showing that the number of road accidents fatalities jumped from 3,707 in 2020 to 4,347 in 2021. 

Nairobi County led the fatality cases with 495 cases, followed by Kiambu (425), Machakos (205), Meru (158) and Murang'a recorded 150 fatalities. 

In Nairobi, Outering Road was the most dangerous roadway in Nairobi with the recorded number of fatal accidents standing at 44. 

Waiyaki Way followed with 38 fatalities in 2021 while Mombasa Road and Northern Bypass tied in third position with 29 deaths during the period under review.
