Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has on Sunday, April 10, backed down in his threat to quit the Azimio La Umoja coalition, saying he was in the movement to stay.

While confirming that his concerns had been addressed, Mutua presented himself as the preferred running mate to the Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

In a press briefing, the governor noted that he was the best fit for the highly sought position - adding that the coalition needed to field the strongest team in order to compete with its rivals, the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

"I believe this country needs the experience of a statesman and the ability of a youthful person. I'm 51 years old very happy, and very youthful and therefore, I present myself for consideration as the running mate to Raila Odinga.

"Raila needs someone he can trust and I know he can trust me," Mutua added.

The governor also offered an olive branch to Wiper's Kalonzo Musyoka noting that they should work together in order to solicit votes for the former Prime Minister.

"I have a special plea for Kalonzo, I respect you but this campaign is not about you, and not about me it's about the people and the victory of Jakom.

"I request that let us strategize and work together. I'm ready for a handshake. Let us get a ceasefire and work together," he stated.

The governor noted that after numerous conversations with members of the Maendeleo Chap Chap party alongside allies, he had resolved to put Kenyans' needs at the forefront instead of positions.

I've talked to many leaders and many friends. In the last few days together with Maendeleo Chap Chap. I've noticed we have options and we have to exercise our options.."

"We promise that our agenda as a party that we resolve to put Kenyans' needs first.

Mutua also lauded Raila for his swift action in ironing out the issues they had raised as part of the Mwanzo Mpya caucus at a recent press briefing.

Further, the parties resolved not to create other factions within the coalition in order to focus on the main agenda of Raila's Presidential bid. His running mate would also be chosen after consultations by all represented parties.
