Police have arrested a twenty three year old man suspected of killing his mother and seven year old brother on the evening of Wednesday, April, 27, 2022 in Kamulu area of Ruai.

The suspected identified as David Kimani Kabiru is said to have used a knife to kill the two before hitting them with a stone.

The mentally challenged student also injured a neighbour who tried to rescue the victims and is recuperating in hospital.

Kabiru, who is currently under police custody, will  undergo a mental check-up before being arraigned.

“When I came I found he had killed his Mother Peninah Njoki Kabiru and brother Ian Kabiru on inquiry he did not deny and told me he did not know why he did the heinous act,” a neighbour intimated.

Georgina, their househelp, escaped narrowly after she curiously attempted to find out what was happening in the house.

“I heard people crying in the house and went to find out what was happening. I found David holding a knife and told me I was next. I ran away immediately,” she narrated.

Doctors had recommended David to be admitted to Mathare mental hospital but refused and was instead put on medication which he declined as well.

It was reported that the student who is said to be mentally challenged did not have any conflict with either her mother or brother.

The Ruai incident comes after Lawrance Warunge of Kiambaa, Kiambu county murdered his close family members and a labourer in January, 2021.

Unlike David, Warunge was not diagnosed with mental challenges and had a rocky relationship with her parents.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates one in every four patients who visit a hospital in Kenya are mental health patients with depression being the most common of all.

Counselors, medics, and psychologists advise that you can always reach out for help when experiencing any mental health issues. Call Kenya Red Cross toll-free hotline, 1199 for support.
