Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is set to appear before the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya advisory panel interviewing potential running mates for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga today.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, May 10, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, who is also a member of the Noah Wekesa-led panel, confirmed that his party boss will be interviewed before the deadline elapses today.
He stated that the interviews were more of conversations rather than vetting as thought by many Kenyans.
"Yes, he will be attending the conversations. It is not an interview," he stated.
Kalonzo has previously expressed his reservations about the panel interviews insisting that the running mates should be chosen through dialogue with President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
He stated that appearing before the interviews would be disrespectful to him even as he insisted that he was the best-suited candidate for the position.
Nonetheless, his party submitted his nomination papers to the panel with his candidature backed by the Baringo Senator Gideon Moi's Kanu party.
"Most people we have met within the campaign trail share the same views as me. The panel has very respectable leaders but there is time we need to have political solutions to some of these problems," he stated.
"It is true that my Secretary-General submitted my nomination application to the panel. I thank Gideon Moi for endorsing my candidature," he stated during a presser on May 6.
However, his statements have seen him come under sharp criticism from a section of Azimio leaders who have accused him of rocking the boat from within.
The advisory panel began the interviews on Monday, May 9 with various candidates including Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, Murang'a Women Representative Sabina Chege, governors Ali Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya appearing before the 7-member panel.
KANU Chairman Gideon Moi did not turn up for the Monday sessions after he threw his weight behind Kalonzo Musyoka. Apart from Kalonzo, governor Charity Ngilu, CS Peter Munya, and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth are also set to be vetted.
Presidential aspirants are required to name running mates by May 16, according to timelines set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
