Citizen TV's Waihiga Mwaura Hosts Kenya's Most Popular Bulletin - Report

Citizen TV news Anchor Waihiga Mwaura's weekly segment is the most watched in the country according to a survey by Geopoll.

In the report chronicling the first quota of the year beginning January to March 2022, Newsnight, a programme hosted by Mwaura, was ranked as the most popular show exceeding Citizen TV's average by over 3 percentage points.

With his straight-pointed questions driven by the show's unofficial principle that 'sometimes the questions are more important than the answers', the combative interviewer is known for pinning down his subjects for the bulletin that transitions into an hour-long discussion.

The time slot garners 33.2 per cent viewership rate forming part of Citizen TV's industry-leading popularity in the 9:00 pm. to 10:00 p.m. prime time that averages 30.5 per cent daily. The station was followed by NTV, KTN and KTN News.

In General, Citizen TV retained its number one position in TV viewership with a 24 per cent.

"Citizen TV continued to dominate the Kenyan airwaves, with an overall share of 24%. NTV (9.5%) had the second-largest share, followed by The Standard Group’s sister channels – KTN and KTN News – and K24.

"Inooro TV (4.8%) and Al Jazeera (3.84%) were the only vernacular and international channels, respectively, among the top ten channels by viewership," read the statement by Geopoll in part.

Citizen TV, however, slumped in its growth after losing six per cent of its market share from 30 per cent in 2021 to 24 per cent in 2022.

In the prime time slot, the station also lost 1 per cent market share dropping from 31.4 per cent to 30 per cent.

The former sports anchor officially took over the slot in November 2019 after the departure of Hussein Mohammed.

Kenyan TV Landscape

Males were the bigger segment of viewers for all the Top TV channels in Kenya, apart from Inooro TV, where 56% of the viewers were female.

For the younger viewers aged between 15 and 24 years, K24, NTV, and Kiss TV were the most-watched TV channels. 

Maisha Magic East, KTN News, and Al Jazeera were the most popular among the 25 to 34-year-olds, while Inooro TV, Citizen TV, and KBC were the go-to TV channels for the older populations aged above 35 years.
