Motorists using the Nairobi - Nakuru highway were advised to use alternative routes after an accident blocked one of the lanes at Mai Mahiu.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), on Saturday, May 28, noted that a lorry overturned near the Italian Catholic church.

KeNHA explained that it would take time for the lorry to be towed, adding that traffic officers were investigating the cause of the accident.

"Traffic police are at the scene managing traffic as interventions are underway to resume normal traffic flow.

"Heavy goods vehicles are advised to use the escarpment route as usual. Other motorists can use the alternative routes where possible," read the statement in part.

Further, the police advised huge vehicles carrying goods to use the escapement route to avoid the traffic snarl-up.

Earlier, motorists plying the route took to social media to lament over the delays and asked road authorities to intervene.

"I am here at Mai Mahiu and traffic is locked. There has been no movement for the last 30 minutes," Pai Grande tweeted.

Other motorists also asked the government to expand the road further to ensure that such incidents do not inconvenience motorists who are travelling for various activities.

The completion of the Ngong - Suswa is the best solution yet it is not complete. His is the best solution to the constant gridlock at Mai Mahiu.

"Imagine all the vehicles heading to Kisii, Sotik, Bomet, Narok, Migori using this route. We need an explanation," Jacob Omari stated.

Construction of the over Ksh170 billion Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit dual carriageway will be bankrolled by various financial institutions such as the World Bank are underway.

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia stated that the project would kick off before President Uhuru Kenyatta exits office in August.

"We will upgrade the old Nairobi-Nakuru highway that serves the major trade route between Nairobi and Western Kenya,” he stated.
