South Mugirango Member of Parliament Silvanus Osoro has come under fire over demeaning remarks made against Azimio's running mate Martha Karua.

Addressing the Abagusii community in Thika town Sunday, June 6, Osoro went after Karua's marital status claiming she was unfit to be deputy president on account of being single.

The MP, affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), further attacked the Narc Kenya leader's looks - using unprintables to describe the veteran politician.

"Martha Karua will resign after only two months and that is why the system picked her as Raila's running mate. She is very impatient and there is no way Raila will handle her. Even though her marriage lasted only two months who is this who thinks he can handle her.

"Women, do not be misled that one of you has been picked, if you look at Martha, does she look like you? She is very handsome," Osoro told the gathering.

A video of the remarks has since gone viral with many Kenyans across the political divide condemning the remarks as unbecoming from any leader of the 21st century.

"I have seen a disturbing video of South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro describing Martha Karua. We agree to disagree but body-shaming a woman based on her looks and private life is a new low," Dennis Nyambane remarked.

"Sylvanus Osoro should know that a woman brought him into this world and he has no right to disrespect them," Abraham Owiti stated.

In the week following her appointment as Raila's running mate, Karua has called on the political class to campaign on issues and avoid personal attacks and insults which she describes as unhelpful to Kenyans.

The Narc Kenya boss has also avoided playing the gender card - solely campaigning on her political journey and that of its candidate

During the National Breakfast, she challenged the national leadership to put their faith into action by preaching politics of ideas.

We pray that moving forward, especially after these prayers that our actions match our words. We pray, especially for us leaders that even as we compete on ideas and not insults, that we lessen the tension in our country with the way we treat each other.

"None of us is perfect, we pray for God’s grace and strength so that we can be able to lead the nation to value and leadership-driven campaigns, Karua remarked.
