Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha, will tour the whole country to personally inspect the preparedness of private schools to handle Junior Secondary classes

Magoha, on Tuesday, June 7, admitted that the government was rushing against time to enforce the next phase of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The major challenge is the availability of classes and accommodation for learners who will transition to Junior Secondary School in 2023.

Private schools had lamented that the government had sidelined them in the implementation of the Junior Secondary Schools programme.

Out of the 10,000 CBC classrooms targetted for construction in primary schools, Magoha noted that nearly 6,000 had been built and thus accommodating private schools with extra spaces will be the much needed relief.

“The 1,200 classes (for private schools) are extra spaces. The government will continue to facilitate and ensure that private schools are registered as quickly as possible,” Magoha stated.

He added that the development of a framework to guide students on the application was in the pipeline.

In January 2023, Magoha will also categorise schools as either national, extra-county, county or sub-county.

“There should be no fear as to what is going to happen to the children as we are pretty well prepared.

“The process of how the children will apply to go to Junior Secondary School is being worked on and we shall advise them on how to apply,” he added.

Magoha also advised the Ministry of Education officials against relapsing, noting that they still had three months in office to secure President Uhuru Kenyatta’s legacy.

“Having an election does not mean we stop working. We shall continue working for the three remaining months until the next government is sworn in.

“We will deliver the 10,000 classes as promised,” added Magoha.

The CBC Task Force recommended that Junior Secondary should be in day schools rather than boarding schools.
