A convict who was released from prison at the mercy of President Uhuru Kenyatta has committed another crime barely two weeks since he was pardoned.

Mwea East Sub-county police boss Daniel Kitavi, on Monday, June 13, confirmed that police officers are investigating an incident in which the former prisoner hacked his own mother to death before vanishing.

According to reports, the unidentified suspect was said to have been embroiled in a land tussle with his mother, Grace Muthoni Ndambiri, before committing the heinous crime.

The incident was brought to the attention of the police by witnesses who stumbled upon the deceased's body in a pool of blood inside her home bathroom.

Kitavi confirmed that her body had sustained injuries to the head when she was found inside her home in the incident that took place on Sunday, June 12.

The man was among over 3,000 petty offenders who were pardoned by President Uhuru Kenyatta during his Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1.

"The woman was fatally attacked as she had deep cuts in the head.

"The man who was released from jail after being pardoned by the President had been demanding a share of the family land from his mother and the duo used to quarrel. We suspect the man eliminated the old woman after she refused to meet his demand," Kitavi stated as per Nation.

Since his release, the offender had been living with her mother in the same homestead since all his siblings had moved out after securing jobs elsewhere.

The President noted that he decided to pardon the 3,908 petty offenders after being advised to do so by his Power of Mercy Advisory Committee. The convicts were serving sentences of less than three months.

“On the recommendation of the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee, I have on this day exercised the presidential prerogative of pardon and granted a second chance to 3,908 inmates,” he stated

“I, therefore, direct that their sentences be commuted by the end of next week in full compliance with all legal procedures and processes and in cognizance of the inmates’ individual probation report," the Head of State stated at the time.
