Kenya Railways Announces New Fares, Stopovers For Nairobi - Kisumu Route

Kenya Railways has announced new fares for passengers plying the Nairobi - Kisumu route in a bid to offer a cost-efficient service. 

While addressing the media, KR Managing Director, Philip Mainga, affirmed that the fares would take effect immediately to enable passengers to capitalise on the new rates. 

The train will now make stopovers at Kibera, Kikuyu, Naivasha, Nakuru, Njoro, Elburgon and Turi, Molo, Mau Summit, Londiani and Kedowa.

Passengers can also alight at Kipkelion, Tunnel, Fort Ternan, Koru, Muhoroni, Chemelil, Kibigori, Miwani and Kibos.

For the economy class, passengers will pay Ksh50 from Nairobi to Kikuyu, Ksh200 from Nairobi to Naivasha, Ksh100 from Nairobi to Limuru and Ksh300 from the Central Business District (CBD) to Nakuru. 

Further, passengers will part with Ksh500 from Nairobi to Kipkelion, Ksh400 from Nairobi to Londiani and Ksh600 as the price for the express route from Nairobi to Kisumu. 

For first-class seats, the public will pay Ksh200 from Nairobi to Kikuyu, Ksh300 from Nairobi to Limuru and Ksh600 from the city to Naivasha. 

In a bid to access Nakuru from Nairobi, passengers will pay Ksh800, and Ksh1,300 from the CBD to Londiani. The first-class ticket from Nairobi to Kisumu is set at Ksh2,000. 

Initially, the corporation offered an 11-hour train ride from Nairobi to Kisumu. The schedule saw the train make stop overs only in Nakuru before heading to Kisumu. 

"We listened to our customers and the general public and decided to make the change to meet their travel needs."

"The Kisumu train will now make the journey during the night," Mainga stated alluding to the new Kisumu safari night service which began operations last weekend.

Passengers in Nairobi can board the train at 6.30pm and arrive in Kisumu at 6.30am the following morning. On the other hand, those booking in Kisumu can board the train at 6.30pm and arrive in Nairobi twelve hours later.
