UPDATE: Friday, June 17: The National Police Service (NPS) says Nairobi Senator, Johnson Sakaja, was not arrested as earlier reported.
Police spokesman, Bruno Shioso, stated that Sakaja presented himself to the DCI headquarters following earlier reports that he was under investigation.
"The Senator presented himself at DCI Headquarters following earlier newspaper reports that he was wanted by police over the university degree matter being canvassed by courts and electoral mechanisms," stated Shioso in a statement.
Shioso added that Sakaja "was cordially received by officers and turned away since he had not been summoned. He therefore left without any further police action."
Nairobi Senator, Johnson Sakaja, surrendered himself to police on Friday, June 17, after reports that he was being investigated over his Ugandan degree.
Sakaja presented himself to DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road for interrogation.
His lawyers camped outside the DCI headquarters after being denied entry.
Prior to surrendering, the Nairobi Senator, who is gunning for the city’s gubernatorial post, was engaged in a bitter spat with the DCI boss, George Kinoti, daring him to effect the arrest.
Kinoti had told Nation Africa that Sakaja and administrators at Team University in Uganda were being investigated over the degree certificate.
The DCI boss noted that Sakaja was being investigated over possible links to an international crime syndicate that has been forging documents.
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, Kipchumba Murkomen, claimed that President Uhuru Kenyatta had authorized Sakaja's arrest.
"President Kenyatta has ordered DCI to arrest Johnson Sakaja in the hope that it will help influence the case in the court and IEBC Dispute Committee.
"Sakaja has a degree and is qualified to run for office under the Constitution and the law. Stop the sideshows. Let the people decide," Murkomen stated.
Sakaja had earlier pointed an accusing finger at President Kenyatta arguing that the Head of State was using his influence to intimidate him as well as officials from Team University where the got his degree from.
“The purported revocation of my credentials by the CUE Chairman is null and void, and politically instigated. The Chairman, Professor Chacha Nyaigotti Chacha, has been coerced and intimidated by President Uhuru Kenyatta to illegally revoke recognition of accreditation that has been properly issued,” the Nairobi Senator stated.
