It has emerged the government, through the Ministry of Education which is led by Cabinet Secretary George Omore Magoha, lost a brand new car just days after making the purchase.

According to a report by Auditor General Nancy Gathungu, the ministry bought a high-end car in 2019 which quickly disappeared in a hijacking incident and has never been seen again.

Following the kidnapping incident, the officials who were involved in the acquisition of the car filed a report to the law enforcement officers.

"Available information indicates that the management acquired a project vehicle - Toyota Fortuner Registration No. GK B193V at a cost of Ksh8,355,900 in May 2019. However, physical verification and motor vehicle records revealed that the vehicle was missing," a report by Auditor General read in part.

"The Project Management explained that the vehicle was stolen, within days after purchase, in a carjacking incident and this was reported to the police," Gathungu added.

However, since the car went missing it has never been recovered or even the progress of the carjacking case reported to the office of the Auditor-General.

According to the report, the missing luxury car from the Ministry of Education opened the lid on other cases within government agencies.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure which is led by James Macharia also recorded a missing car valued at Ksh6.5 million.

The car of registration number GKB 211J belonged to the Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology and was reported stolen on July 3, 2020.

To date, the car has never been recovered, raising more questions about how other valuables keep disappearing from government coffers.

Trade CS Betty Maina's ministry also lost two cars whose value was not indicated by the Gathungu.

The revelation came just months after a mechanic found guilty of stealing President Uhuru Kenyatta's car was sentenced to death.

Milimani Chief Magistrate, Francis Andayi, noted that the harsh penalty was due to the theft being considered a matter of national security.

The suspect was charged alongside four others with robbing a Chief Inspector of Police, David Machui, a BMW 735 car model that was valued at Ksh1.2 million at the time.

The incident happened in Utawala, Nairobi area on August 26, 2014, where the senior police officer was robbed at gunpoint in what was described as a case of carjacking.
