Turbocharger was previously not available in the lower end petrol cars and was available only in high-end luxury machines.

In modern day, this technology is being used by vehicle manufacturers to mitigate the skyrocketing fuel costs.

During a Transport and Infrastructure Conference in Nairobi, HK Motors Managing Director Jake Goh stated that the company is assembling SUVs for local consumption with small engine capacity fixed with turbocharger.

"Turbocharger engine can inject more fuel when needed, but if not, helps save fuel in an idle speed," said Goh.

A turbo charged engine according to HK can make a smaller engine (1.0 or 1.2 liters) more or equally powerful as a bigger normally aspirated engine (1.4 or 1.5 liters).

Goh noted that manufacturing car engines with small capacity with a turbocharger included is also for fuel consumption reasons.

"A seven seater can with a turbo engine can consume similar amount of fuel similar to a small car," he added.

SUVs were traditionally seen as diesel engine cars but now because of turbochargers, manufacturers are now preferring Petrol engines.

In a normal engine, the air is sucked in by the suction created by the piston in the cylinders of the engine. In a turbocharged engine, highly compressed air is pushed into the engine by the turbocharger.

The Wednesday Conference included various technological exhibition among them smart cameras that capture details of traffic violators and then transmit them to a Traffic Management Center.

According to Winfred Oginga, a Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) official, Kenya is adopting technology used in other developed countries like the US, where offences are captured real-time.

In the US, traffic rules are enforced using the timed system, a sensor system or a combination of the two. They control how motorists move around the cities. In case of offences, the systems inform the cops who then track down motorists and issue them with a ticket to either appear in court or pay a fine.

"We want to roll out all these programmes all over town," Oginga stated during the conference.
