The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Noordin Haji, has detailed the nifty tricks used by Kimilili Member of Parliament, Didmus Barasa, to evade police arrest.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 10, Haji stated that the legislator could not be tracked using his mobile phone.

The country's top prosecutor noted that the matter ought to be treated with the utmost urgency as the Legislator was still at large.

The DPP made the statement a few minutes after a tweet was shared on Barasa's official account. The tweet had a picture of him with Deputy President, William Ruto, with a caption masaa ndio machache (time is limited).

The DPP ordered police to fast track the arrest of the Legislator and the file availed to his office for appropriate action.

Barasa is wanted over an incident where he reportedly shot dead an opponent's driver during a commotion at Chebukwabi polling station. He is reported to have escaped shortly and has been in hiding since then.

"DPP Noordin Haji has given directions to have Hon. Didimus Barasa apprehended, record a statement and have the relevant file availed to his office for appropriate action. Barasa who is the incumbent MP, Kimilili Constituency, was reported to have shot and killed Brian Olunga, on 9th August 2022 at Chebukwabi Polling Station.

"Olunga was a bodyguard to Mr. Brian Khaemba, who was Mr. Barasa's opponent in the elections. According to police in Bungoma, the MP is still at large and his phone is switched off," the Office of the DPP stated.

Earlier, Bungoma County Commissioner, Samuel Kimiti, alleged that the Legislator was suspected to have crossed the border into Uganda using a motorcycle after receiving a tipoff from witnesses. He ordered the legislator to surrender within 24 hours at the nearest police station.

"We want him to surrender to police wherever he is. If any member of the public spots him, let them alert the police," Kimiti stated.

A police report had indicated that the incident occurred when DAP-Kenya candidate, Brian Khaemba visited Chebukwabi polling station alongside his aide and his driver in order to monitor the vote counting process.

At the time, Olunga crossed paths with Barasa when he was leaving the polling station. Police reports indicated that Khaemba Olunga defied Barasa after he instructed them not to leave the polling station.

The police further revealed that Barasa followed Khaemba and opened fire, killing the politician's aide, Brian Olunga.
