An 81-year-old granny was detained by Polish authorities after she was arrested with 5 kilogrammes of heroine valued at Ksh61 million ($515,000).

International media reported that the incident occurred at the Frederic Chopin Airport in Poland after she showed uneasy behaviour.

Photos released by the Polish Authorities on Friday, August 19, showed that the consignment had been hidden in a bottom pouch of the bag she was travelling with.

She had left Malawi and Kenya and was destined for Canada through Doha and Warsaw Airports.

When queried about the consignment, the granny maintained that she had not done anything wrong since she did not know the contents of her bag.

She noted that she had been given the luggage by her family back in Africa and told that it contained gifts she would give relatives in Canada.

She was, nonetheless, detained by the Polish authorities for three months as investigations into her case kicks off.

She risks jail term of 15 years if found guilty of the offence.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the global drug trade is valued at Ksh3.8 trillion (USD32 billion) affecting many families globally.

The trade has effectively been ranked as the most lucrative form of business for criminals worldwide.

"Drug trafficking flows have global dimensions linking regions and continents, sometimes with dramatic consequences for the countries they affect," read the statement in part.

In Kenya, the war against drugs has continued to be a thorny issue as the cost of living skyrockets.
