An Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official has dismissed reports that she had gone missing.

In an interview with The Standard on Tuesday, August 23, the Chuka Igambang'ombe Returning Officer, Josephine Mwiti, dismissed the news of her alleged disappearance.

She urged members of the public to ignore the reports that were circulating on social media, adding that she was safe and sound at her home.

Reports surrounding her alleged disappearance first appeared on social media on Tuesday, August 23, when a Twitter user claimed that the Returning Officer had gone missing on Monday.

The tweet garnered traction on Twitter and screengrabs circulated on WhatsApp groups.

Kenyans on social media sought clarification from IEBC but no statement had been issued by the time of going to press.

Members of the public also raised concerns over the security provided to IEBC officials during the election period after the Embakasi East Returning Officer, Daniel Musyoka, went missing only to be found dead days later.

IEBC chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, announced on Friday, August 12, that Daniel Musyoka went missing on August 11, and could not be traced.

He further added that the Commission could not reach him on the phone as his number was off.

His body was discovered by herders in a forest in Oloitokitok.

The body was positively identified by his sisters, Mary Mwikali and Ann Mboya, at the Oloitokitok sub-county mortuary.

Oloitoktok police boss, Kipruto Ruto, confirmed that the family had identified Musyoka, ending a five-day search for the missing Returning Officer.

The police believed Musyoka was killed elsewhere and his body dumped in the forest. According to the officers, his body had visible signs of torture and struggle.
