In any battle, commanders will always look for faithful soldiers who pledge their allegiance and are ready to risk it all on the battlefield for a common course.
Equally, in politics, allegiance is one of the key factors a presidential candidate will consider when assembling their campaign teams.
This was witnessed in the just concluded August 9 polls after former Nyeri deputy governor, Caroline Karugu, and former Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) co-chair, Dennis Waweru, declined ambassadorial positions to join former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's campaign team.
Karugu was appointed Kenya's Ambassador to Demark on April 22 by President Uhuru Kenyatta. However, she declined the role to focus on her role in Raila's campaign team.
Her withdrawal from the process was communicated to Parliament by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that explained she was focusing on 'other duties'.
At the time, she was among Raila's chief campaigners in the Mt Kenya region and occasionally accompanied Martha Karua on the campaign trail.
Her loyalty to the ODM boss saw her get picked as one of the Chief Agents overseeing the votes verification process at the Bomas of Kenya.
Karugu was Governor Mutahi Kahiga's deputy. However, the duo fell out in the latter years of their term despite interventions by Raila and Uhuru.
On the other hand, Dennis Waweru was appointed as Kenya's Consul General at the Kenyan Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo during the same time as Karagu.
Nonetheless, Waweru opted to continue with campaigns for Azimio's presidential candidate in Nairobi county.
Additionally, the city-based politician threw his hat in the Dagoretti South parliamentary contest but lost to the incumbent, John Kiarie popularly known as KJ who was vying on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.
Waweru was vying under a Jubilee Party ticket and garnered 22,773 votes, with KJ garnering 26,394 votes.
The former Dagoreti South Legislator (2013-2017) was among key leaders who spearheaded Uhuru and Raila's BBI agenda having served in the secretariat alongside, Suna East MP-elect, Junet Mohamed.
