The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has explained its decision to charge Kimilili Member of Parliament-elect Didmus Barasa with the murder of Brian Olunga.

In a statement dated Wednesday, August 24, the investigative agency disclosed that they had completed comprehensive investigations into the incident with all evidence pointing to the lawmaker as the prime suspect.

The police recounted that a special team from Nairobi was deployed to the scene of the crime where it was established that the MP-elect was present at the time of the shooting.

Additionally, DCI noted that ballistic investigations revealed that the gun used in the incident belonged to the legislator.

"Ballistic experts based at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory linked Hon Barasa’s firearm to the fatal shot that took away Olunga’s life. This followed a report issued by the ballistic experts after the investigating team forwarded Hon Barasa’s Glock Pistol.

"A cartridge and bullet fragments were taken to the ballistic lab for forensic analysis. The report noted that the recovered cartridge was fired by the Glock pistol issued to Hon Barasa.

Further, the police disclosed that the bullet fragments collected at the scene matched those recovered from the deceased's body.

Barasa was charged in court on Wednesday morning and pleaded not guilty.

The arraignment of the legislator and consequent statement by the DCI came days after police were granted 10 days to hold the legislator as they conclude their investigations.

Barasa surrendered himself to the police after he was given a six-hour ultimatum by detectives on August 11.

On his part, the MP-elect distanced himself from the incident and claimed that was hiding as his life was in danger.

Barasa alleged that unknown men were out to assassinate him days before the polls.

"On Sunday night, my private bodyguard was attacked badly and he was in a coma for three days and he was on life care. the same night I survived an assassination attempt," he stated on August 12.
