At least eight people have sustained serious injuries after a 42- seater matatu they were travelling in lost control at Kaseve, Machakos County.
The matatu was heading to Makueni County from Nairobi via the Machakos-Kitui Road on Saturday, August 27.
The region is known to be a blackspot with several accidents reported along the road that connects the lower eastern counties of Makueni, Kitui and Machakos.
Motorists Spend Two Nights in Traffic
Elsewhere, motorists plying the Mai Mahiu-Limuru stretch were forced to spend two nights on the road after a traffic gridlock in the area.
According to reports, the congestion which stretched to over 20 KM started after an accident involving a truck which blocked the narrow yet busy road.
Motorists using the route incurred losses after the goods they were transiting expired due to delayed delivery.
According to the motorists, traffic congestions are rampant on the route with the government offering fewer solutions.
“I urge the government to expand this road. The expansion will solve the rampant traffic jams experienced along this road,” one of the motorists remarked.
The Limuru-Mai Maihiu is used by truckers and public service vehicles heading to Western Kenya, South Rift and South Nyanza regions.
The stretch is also used by heavy commercial vehicles destined to the neighbouring countries- Uganda and Tanzania as well as tourists visiting Maasai Mara National Park in Narok County which is a major tourist destination.
Calls to expand the 21 KM road have ended in futility despite its significance to the country's economy.
