The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has cautioned Kenyans to be wary of a new scam purporting to offer employment opportunities with a monthly salary of up to Ksh60,000.

In a statement on Sunday, September 4, KAA noted that official notices about vacancies are only published in local dailies and on the agency's website.

The post purported to recruit clerks, toll attendants and cleaners, in conjunction with the Nairobi Expressway and China Road and Bridge Corporation.

The post claimed that the Ksh60,000 salary was negotiable after 3 months of probation, According to the notice, candidates would send their Curriculum vitae by quoting their job titles in the email subject lines.

"We wish to fill the above positions which have risen between KAA and Nairobi Expressway in cooperation with China Road and Bridge Corporation," read part of the notice.

While flagging the post as fake, KAA noted that vacancies would be posted on the official website kaa (dot) go (dot) ke and local dailies.

Reports of job scams have risen in the recent past owing to the rising rate of unemployed youth in the country.

According to the latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the unemployment rate in Kenya increased to 6.6 percent in the first quarter of 2021, against 5.4 percent in the previous quarter.

How to Spot Fake Adverts

Candidates are advised to countercheck whether a post consists of both spelling or grammatical errors as it is uncanny for most businesses to portray themselves in a bad light when advertising for a post.

Further, candidates should do a quick search to ensure a company has an online presence as well as carefully go through the details of the job advertisement. Be wary of quick rich scams that sound too good to be true.

Another red flag to watch out for is the recruiter's email. Avoid addresses that have a personal domain such as Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail.

In addition, look out for job adverts that request payment before interviews. Recruiting agencies always post that their advertisements are free of charge and hence no one should pay any amount for the vacant position.
