Nakuru Senator-elect Tabitha Karanja Keroche has clarified a proposal she made to the president-elect William Ruto, asking him to introduce a fuel kitty for incoming lawmakers, after it sparked uproar.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Wednesday, September 7, Karanja clarified that when she asked for the allotment, it was not for herself but her counterparts who may not have the financial muscle to deliver their oversight roles.

She stated that at the time, it seemed like the senate was only meant for those who were accomplished in life as they did not require any backing from the state.

"Let me make it clear, I was not asking for the kitty for myself because I can do with or without it. I was looking out for their young politician who is coming in must be accomplished," Keroche explained.

The first-time senator admitted that she was oblivious to policies that her future employer, the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) put in place to facilitate the lawmakers.

She confirmed that her attendance of the orientation ceremony enlightened her on some of the privileges that senators are entitled to.

"After going through the orientation process, I realised that there was a lot I did not know. These things are already available in terms of the mileage, mortgage and cars," Karanja remarked.

The Keroche proprietor, now privy to the policies and privileges, noted that neither she or her colleagues had an excuse not to deliver their core mandate entrusted to them by the electorate.

"I can say that we are well taken care of and I will not ask for fuel again. We do not need any kitty and so we do not have no excuse not to perform," she added.

Karanja's statement during thanksgiving church service at Larmudiac High School attended by Kenya Kwanza, while responding to a clarion call by the incoming Head of State to all elected leaders to begin working for the people.

This caused a public outrage, with Kenyans questioning why she would ask for a financial boost from taxpayers money when she is a billionaire.

Angry Kenyans reckoned that she was like typical elected leaders, who often amend laws in their favour at the expense of taxpayer.

On the other hand, a section of Kenyans defended her, terming her request as genuine.
