The family of the late Baringo deputy governor Charles Kipng'ok who collapsed and died at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was shocked to learn of his death through social media.

Speaking to Nation, Baringo residents and friends of the family confirmed that Kipng'ok death started as rumours before their worst fears were confirmed at night on Wednesday, September 14.

One David Biegon a captain at the Kericho Golf Club where the DG was a member, added that the family was yet to come to terms with the loss.

"When we went to his home in Kericho town to break the news to his family, we found that they had got it a bit earlier through social media," Biegon stated.

He eulogized the politician as a pillar of society who freely interacted with everyone.

"His death is a big blow to all of us and we pray to God to give the family the fortitude to bear with the loss," the captain remarked.

The residents recounted how a string of phone calls and messages hit the family.

"Before a series of phone calls came through, the family members, like others, learnt of the collapse and subsequent death from Facebook and WhatsApp groups," Benard Korir at the homestead disclosed.

Despite the cause of death being unknown, the family divulged that the DG had an underlying health condition - high blood pressure and diabetes.

Kipng'ok collapsed and died on Wednesday, September 14 moments after boarding a Kenya Airways plane at the JKIA.

"Kenya Airways regrets to announce that a passenger developed breathing difficulties this evening while boarding KQ612 that was scheduled to depart for Mombasa at 1900hours.

"The passenger was pronounced dead by medical personnel at JKIA while the aircraft was still on the ground," read part of the statement.

Several leaders have sent their condolences message to the fallen politician.

"Charles Kipng'ok was a responsive, genuine, and passionate leader who worked tirelessly for the people of Baringo. He was principled and boldly championed tea reforms in our country.

We pray to God that He grants the family, the loved ones, and the people of Baringo strength at this sad time. Rest In Peace," President William Ruto stated in his condolence message.

Council of Governors CEO Mary Mwiti also mourned the late DG, during the induction of county chiefs in Mombasa.
